Market Facts

We know that nearsighted vision problems are more common in younger people while farsighted vision complications typically arise during the golden years. This lead us to perform a little research where we realized that worldwide over 4 billion adults wear glasses. The largest single market, the US alone has over 271 million people who wear eyeglasses, which doesn’t include the additional 11% of adults and 5% of children who wear contact lenses that may also wear them with eyeglasses. Growing demand over the next six years is driven by a growing population in addition to the rising number of visual deficiencies and aging population as well as the increase in sunglasses demand for health, lifestyle, and cosmetic purposes.

More than 1.4 billion pairs of lenses and frames were sold worldwide in 2013 alone, with the US representing over 30% of the overall market share. While continuing to grow since then, the market is expected to grow 3.2% per year over the next 6 years, eventually exceeding 1.7 billion by 2020. Additionally, the US in 2013 had approximately 85% of the entire population wearing sunglasses. The result is that more than 96 million sunglasses were sold, where the plano sunglasses segment alone is expected to grow 8.1% annually over this same 6-year period.
